ChatGPT wrote your references. Check them.

Most fakes look fine until you search for them.

Example report

3 citations · 1 valid · 1 misattributed · 1 replaced

  • Valid

Vaswani, A., et al. (2017). Attention is all you need. arXiv:1706.03762

Citation metadata matched a real academic record.

  • Misattributed

    LeCun, Y., Bengio, Y., & Hinton, G. (2019). Deep learning. Science.

A real source was found, but the bibliographic match is weak (0.58 confidence).

Rebuilt from the record · APA 7

    LeCun, Y., Bengio, Y., & Hinton, G. (2015). Deep learning. Nature. https://doi.org/10.1038/nature14539

  • Replaced

Harper, J. (2021). Quizzing and long-term memory in first-year students. Journal of Applied Study Science, 8(2), 112–130.

The original citation was weak or broken, and a stronger replacement source was suggested.

    Suggested replacement · APA 7

    Roediger, H. L., & Karpicke, J. D. (2006). Test-enhanced learning: Taking memory tests improves long-term retention. Psychological Science. https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1467-9280.2006.01693.x

Verify mode

How the citation checker tests a reference

Open the AI Citation Generator and pick Verify Paper.

  1. The whole paper goes in

Paste up to 180,000 characters or upload a file under 10 MB.

  2. The databases decide

AI finds each reference. DOIs and arXiv IDs get looked up directly, everything else by its text.

  3. A verdict and a fix

If a reference fails, Ryne looks for a real paper that makes the same point.

“I use Discover to build the bibliography, then hand the paper back to Verify before submission. One tool covers the whole arc — from blank page to defensible reference list.”

Five verdicts

Keep it, fix it or cut it

Citation checker verdicts and what to do about each one
ValidA real record matches its ID or details. What to do: Keep it. Check the matched title is yours.
MisattributedReal paper, wrong year, journal or authors. What to do: Copy the right details from the record.
BrokenThe DOI, ID or link goes nowhere. What to do: Look for a typo in the ID.
FakeNo convincing record in any database. What to do: Cut it, or cite something you've read.
ReplacedIt failed, and Ryne found a real alternative. What to do: Read the new source before you cite it.

What it can't check

  • Books and web pages, which the databases often miss
  • Quotes in paywalled papers, unless they're in the abstract
  • A real DOI glued to a made-up title
  • Whether the source backs your point. You read that part.
Hallucinated citations

Why ChatGPT makes up citations

ChatGPT guesses the likeliest next word, and references are easy to guess. A 2024 JMIR study found 47% of its references fabricated and another 46% with errors.

FAQ

Before your first check

Ryne calls a reference Fake when no database holds a convincing record of it. A dead DOI comes back Broken, and half-right details come back Misattributed.

Search the exact title in Google Scholar, open the DOI at doi.org, and check the authors, year and journal match. Then find the passage you're citing. Ryne does the lookups for a whole list in one go.

Yes. Ryne uses AI to find each reference in your paper, then lets CrossRef, Semantic Scholar and the rest settle whether it's real. The AI never grades its own homework.

Partly. Ryne checks each reference exists, then rebuilds it in APA 7 from the database record. It leaves out volume, issue and pages, and won't check italics or indents.

Yes, on the free plan: 100 coins, no card needed. A 1,500-word paper costs 50 coins to check. Longer ones cost 75, or 100 past 4,000 words.

CrossRef, Semantic Scholar and OpenAlex, plus PubMed and arXiv. Those two join in for medical, CS, maths and physics topics, or when a reference carries a PubMed or arXiv ID.
One more pass

Check the list. Then hand it in.
